Amber DarlingMy name is Amber Elizabeth Darling and I am an emerging young artist living in Duluth, Minnesota . I create colorful oil paintings mostly of curious and interesting subject matter. I work mostly from photographs taken abroad or around Minnesota . Normally, I will choose photographs based on criteria involving interesting form and space and bright color combinations. My artwork is representational but not entirely photographic. Rather, the translation from photo to canvas adopts an almost dreamlike quality. That is, if you believe we all dream in color- not in black and white. My artwork is constantly changing and evolving as I explore new techniques. I have included a variety of work from my high school and college years on this website to illustrate my progress. |

| Description: | ‘Winterscape’ is an abstract painting of a frozen landscape that includes imagery of an old gnarled tree with a red bird seemingly frozen to its branch, dangling icicles, and a frozen lake surrounded by a cascade of snow. The scene is lit with dots of golden light; perhaps from the unattainable warmth of a lantern or hearth whose far away distance serves only to accentuate the cold night. |

| Description: | ‘Rape of a Sabine Woman’ is based on the famous sculpture of the same name by Giambologna; who was a contemporary of Michelangelo. I used bright colors and sweeping brush strokes to emphasize the intensity of movement and of the drama unfolding before the viewer that would otherwise be difficult to illustrate on a 2-dimensional surface. |

| Description: | ‘Close-Up Knee (From Rape of a Sabine Woman)’ is one small part of an earlier painting magnified. In this case, it is the knee of the bottom figure of my earlier painting Rape of a Sabine Woman. I painted Close-Up Knee for an abstract painting class I took in college. I wanted to convey the idea that any recognizable object can be broken down into an abstract form and can thereby be subject to many interpretations. For example, one might not see a knee at all but a stylized landscape. I see similarities in this piece to the works of Georgia O’Keefe who painted similar simple, smooth forms, and unconventional subject matter that made her work so recognizable and groundbreaking for the new modernism movement in America. |

| Description: | ‘Green Nude’ was a nude study that I rendered in a college painting class. The unusual green color that I applied to the figure was inspired by the work of a group of artists around the turn of the century called ‘The Fauves’ or wild beasts because of their wild and bizarre use of color as a means of expression. |
